ABOUT THE BOOK

With 5.5 million people in prison, in jails, or on parole, the United States has reached a truly crisis level of incarceration. Millions of people, oftentimes recapitulating the trauma inflicted on them, are separated from society into our nation’s punitive justice system and into more hardship. And yet, Orthodox Christian Prison Ministry (OCPM) receives many stories from inmates that are profoundly humbling.

It is time these stories are shared.

Suffer with You is a collection of three essays from people on various sides of the U.S. prison system, all approaching the theme of forgiveness. One man learns how to forgive his mother’s murderer, another commits a hate crime and now leads a prayer group for racial reconciliation, and a former pastor wrestles with the long-term effects of his crime. One final expository essay leads the reader through the “Liturgy of Forgiveness”, a systematic prayer rule first conceived by +Schemanun Siluana Vlad, that we may all draw closer to God’s radical forgiveness and share that forgiveness with others.
