Michael’s Story – God of All Comfort Icon

I met a man named Michael in a prison and began writing him regularly. At one point, Michael wrote to me that he loved getting my letters but asked that I stop mentioning God in them. I continued to write Michael for the next 20 years with no indication that his heart was moving toward God. Then one day, he wrote that he had been won over. He now believed and wanted to be baptized into the Orthodox Faith. After several attempts to schedule his baptism with the institution, Fr. Stephen Powley and I were finally able to baptize him.
Soon after his baptism, Michael completed his first and only Icon, sending it to me. He only had a set of crayons with which to work. And since he was in solitary confinement, the only model he had with which to work in drawing the face of Christ was his own face. His precious Icon remains a holy treasure to me and all who have seen it.
Shortly after this, Michael’s health declined rapidly and he fell asleep in the Lord. Truly God is patient desiring that all would be saved.
